The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra will present the concert 'A Child's Five Senses Game — Listen and Draw II' on 26 and 27 April. Conceived and directed by Erhu Assistant Principal Mak Ka-yan, the concert will transform the concert hall into a playful 'Animal Farm', where Chinese instruments will mimic various animal cries and sounds, taking young audiences on a unique adventure on the farm. The orchestra will perform in a lively and vibrant style, accompanied by emcee Mak Sze-wing, who has rich experience in early childhood education, to guide parents and children to explore the world of emotions in music, while also helping children to learn about diverse ethnic instruments and promoting their sensory development.
The concert features a specially designed 'Animal Farm' theme, where instruments such as the erhu and flute will be used ingeniously to imitate animal sounds, such as the crowing of a rooster, the galloping of horses, and the chirping of crickets. This will encourage children to use their imagination and interact with the music, creating a joyful farm atmosphere.
The orchestra has also carefully selected several vividly descriptive pieces, including classic Chinese music works such as 'Wild Dance of the Golden Snake' and 'Bird Singing in the Empty Mountain', as well as English nursery rhymes specially adapted for Chinese instruments, such as 'The Wheels on the Bus' and 'Old McDonald'. Through the unique timbres of the ethnic instruments, the concert will showcase the versatility of Chinese music, allowing children to discover the charm of Chinese music within familiar melodies.
According to research on child development, the period between three and six years old is the golden age for cultivating multiple intelligences. The combination of music and visual arts effectively stimulates children's sensory development. The concert will feature artworks created by children during the previous 'Listen and Draw Workshop'. These drawings, inspired by 'Bird Singing in the Empty Mountain', will be displayed on a large screen, creating a multisensory artistic experience together with the live performance.
*Suitable for children aged 3-6 and their parents
